Introduction

Now in the world there are a lot of cars. You can see them in cities, countries, in the streets. You can see cars everywhere. A lot of countries make cars: Japan, USA, Russia, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and others. Every country has got some firms which produce cars. For example, Russia has got such firms as GAZ, MAZ, UAZ. Every firm usually has got some models and each model has got a name. Very often we can't understand what this name means.

In my work I want to know:

1. from what languages the names come;

2. how many names are English;

3. how English names are formed.

Where do the names of the cars come from?

For my work I take the names of the cars of 5 Japanese firms: Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, Suzuki, Honda.

I have got 29 names of the cars of the firm Mazda. I can't clear up the two names because they have got only the first letters: AZ-1, B-360.

Mazda uses the words of 5 languages: Italian, Latin, Spanish, French and English. We have got 13 English words, 3 proper names,

4 Italian words: Atenza- внимание , Senta- чувство , Luce- свет, Spiano-обширный;

2 Latin words; Lantist-секретная крепость , Persona- персона;

2 Spanish words: Demio-мой , Familia- семья;

3 French words: Etude-этюд , Revue-журнал , Chante-петь .

I have got 27 names of the firm Suzuki. I can't clear up and translate 3 words. Suzuki uses the words of 6 languages: English, Latin, Italian, French, Japanese, Spanish. We have got 13 English words,

2 Latin words: Ignis-огонь ,Cultus- поклонение;

4 Italian words: Cervo-олень, Alto- превосходство, Cappuccino-каппуччино , Fronte - фронт;

1 French word : Lapin-кролик ;

3 Japanese words: Kei-легкий , Cara-полоса , Samurai- самурай;

1 Spanish word: Escudo-древняя монета Испании.

We have got 32 names of the cars of the firm Mitsubishi. I can't find the translation of 4 names: Dion, Toppo, GTO, Legnum.

Mitsubishi uses the words of 5 languages: English, French, Spanish, Latin, Italian. We have got 13 English words, 1 proper name,

7 Spanish words: Eterne-вечный , Carisma-харизма , Delica-деликатный , Diamante- алмаз, Mirage-мираж, Montero- егерь, Magna-великая;

2 French words: Gallant- галантный, Emeraude- изумруд ;

2 Latin words: Lancer-весы , Grandis-большой ;

2 Italian words: Libero-бесплатно , Strada- дорога.

I have got 29 names of the cars of the firm Honda. I can't explain 2 names. Honda uses 3 languages: English, Italian, Spanish. There are 21 English names,

2 Italian words; Concerto-концерт , Domain-завтра ;

4 Spanish words: Torneo-турнир , Integra-интеграция , Capa- слой\мощность, Rafaga-молния.

There are 83 names of the cars of the firm Toyota in my work. I can't translate 9 names.This firm uses the words of 8 languages: English, German, Arabic, French, Latin, Italian, Japanese, Spanish. There are 48 English words, 1 proper name,

4 German words: Kluger-умный, Raum-просторный , Platz-площадь , Opa-дедушка ;

1 Arabic word: Alfard-одиночная ;

1 French word: Pronard-белоус ;

9 Latin words: Supra-расположенный выше , Regius-царский , Allex-большой палец ноги , Auris-ухо , Brevis- короткий, Fortuner-осчастливить , Сelsior-высокий\ благородный, Ipsum- себя, Prius-раньше ;

4 Italian words: Passo-шаг , Altezza-высота , Caldina- центральная, Gaia-веселый;

1 Japanese word: Camry- небольшая корона;

5 Spanish words: Previa-предварительный , Premio-награда,Solara-род\ фамилия , Cresta-гребень , Carina-нежная .

The English names of the cars

From 200 names we have got 108 English words.

Many of these words are international nouns. They are clear to everybody (27 words).

Prelude - прелюдия, Сorona - корона, Wagon - фургон, Arista - аристократ, Sienna - сиена \ охра , Tundra- тундра, Echo - эхо, Duet - дуэт , Cavalier - кавалер\ всадник, Scepter - скипетр, Sequoia - секвойя, Progress - прогресс, Matrix - матрица , Picnic - пикник, Liana -лиана , Cappuccino - каппучино, Savanna - саванна, Expo - крупная выставка , Jeep - джип\ вездеход, Bravo - браво \ овация толпы, Jazz - джаз, Accord - согласие, Partner - партнер , Pilot - пилот, Porter - носильщик, Horizon- горизонт, Legend- легенда.

The next group is also the nouns. We should know their translations to understand the meanings of the names .These nouns stress the form of the car or are connected with movement.

Rush - стремительное движение, Tribute - дань, Works - работа \ труд, Tercel - сокол, Scion - потомок \ наследник, Stream - поток \ ручей , Chariot - колесница, Bongo - антилопа бонго, Scrum - схватка за мяч в регби, Splash -брызги \ плеск , Current - струя \ поток, Palette -палитра , Twin - близнец, Space - пространство, Eclipse - затмение, Endeavor - старание, Carol - праздничная песня, Mark - знак \ метка, Corolla - венчик цветка, Will - воля, Cynosure -центр внимания , Crown - корона , Blade - лезвие, Verso - оборотная сторона книги , Vista - перспектива \ вид , Wish - желание, Starlet - звездочка, Jimny - «фомка» \ отмычка, Colt- жеребенок, Beat- удар, City-город , Insight-проницательность ,Life-жизнь ,Saber-сабля ,Street- улица, Today- сегодня.

There are only 4 names which are formed from the verbs.

Aspire -стремиться, Inspire - вдохновлять, Proceed - продолжать, Succeed - следовать.

There are 9 names formed from the adjectives. These words show dignity of the car or help to understand for whom this car is.

Civic -гражданский , Debonair - обходительный \ учтивый , Estima(ble) - достойная, Every - каждый \ всякий, Fit - годный \ подходящий , Millenia(l) - тысячелетний.

3 adjectives are formed from the nouns with the suffix - y : Landy - земляной

(от Land -земля), Sparky -искристый (от Spark -искра), Towny -городской (от Town -город).

There are 14 names that have got two words: Airwave -воздушная волна (air-воздух , wave -волна), Funcargo -веселый груз ( fun-веселье , cargo - груз), Carry Truck- везущая повозка( carry-везти , truck- повозка ), Highlander - горец ( high- высокий, land - земля), Land Cruiser -наземный крейсер (land- земля, cruise - плавание), Outlander-чужестранец ( out -вне , land -земля), Park Way - парковая дорожка ( park- парк, way -путь) , Porter cab-погрузчик-такси (porter-носильщик , cab- такси), Probox -профессиональная коробка ( pro-профессионал , box-коробка), Road Pacer - задающий темп на дороге ( road-дорога , pace-шагать ), Tourig Hiace-путешествующий высший ас ( tour-путешествие , ace-ас ), Town Ace- городской ас ( town-город , ace- ас), Vanguard - авангард ( van- головной отряд, guard- караульный ), Cross Road-перекресток (cross- пересекать,road - дорога).

Some names are formed from the verbs with the suffix - ER which means a person who fulfills this action: Challenger -посылающий вызов ( challenge- вызывать), Harrier- гончая \ участник кросса ( harry-опустошать ), Chaser-преследователь (chase-преследовать), Cruiser- крейсер ( cruise- плавание), Sprinter , Soarer -тот, который парит ( soar- парить), Highlander, Land Cruiser, Oulander, Road Pacer, Runner- бегунок ( run- бегать).

3 names of the cars in our group have got two words : one- English and one- not English: Verisa- настоящее удовлетворение ( verita- итал.правда, satisfaction-англ.удовлетворение ), Aeriosedan-воздушный бампер ( aerio-испан.воздух , sedan- англ. седан), Eunos100- радостное число ( eu- лат.радость, number- англ. число)

5 names are shortened: MPV- многоцелевой автомобиль ( multi-purpose vehicle), Axela- движущийся вперёд ( accelerate), Allion- всё в одном ( all in one), MRWagon- автомобиль для хорошего расслабления( multi- relax wagon), Lexus- комбинация слов lexury+ elegance.

There are some names which are the proper names: Capella- the brightest star, Laputa-the country which Gulliver visited , Titan-the name of the Greek God , Triton-the name of the Greek God, Odyssey- the name of the mythical king, Nadia- ?, Noah-the character of the Bible, Avalon- the land where the king Arthur died.

Conclusion

1. The names of Japanese cars come from some languages: Italian, Latin, Spanish, French, English, German, Arabic, Japanese.

2. The most names are English.

3. The English names are often international.

4. The most English names are formed from nouns and can be proper nouns.

5. The English names can have two words, suffix -er and suffix -y, can be shortened.
