по английскому языку

для 9 - 11 классов

«World's greatest English writer

аnd dramatist William Shakespeare»

Цель: ознакомить с биографией и произведениями У.Шекспира.

Задачи: образовательные: расширить знания учащихся о жизни и творчестве У.Шекспира; ознакомить с его отдельными произведениями и их переводами; развивающие: развивать интеллектуальные способности и кругозор школьников, способность понимать и ценить шедевры мировой классической литературы;

воспитательные: воспитывать интерес, уважение к культуре страны изучаемого языка, английской литературе.

Оборудование: компьютер, мультимедийный проектор, портрет Шекспира; презентация по теме «World's greatest English writer and dramatist William Shakespeare»; видеофильм, посвященный биографии писателя; декорация и костюмы для инсценировки «Ромео и Джульетта»; выставка книг с его произведениями.

Under a Stary painting Pyramid?

That king for such a tomb would wish to die.

Host. The 23^rd of April is the Day when literature fans all over the world commemorate the birth and death of William Shakespeare (слайд№1).

Today we are going to devote our party to the greatest English writer of all times William Shakespeare.

The last half of 16^th and the beginning of the 17^th centuries are known as the golden age of English literature (слайд№2).

It was a time of the English Renaissance and sometimes it is even called the age Shakespeare.

Hostess. There's hardly a country in the world, which doesn't know Shakespeare's plays. He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. The most famous of them are "Romeo and Juliet", "King Lear", Othello", "Macbeth" ,"Hamlet", "Much Ado about Nothing", "The Comedy of Errors", "Twelfth Night" and many others.

W.Shakespeare's works will always be interesting for all people because he shows the real life of the people and their higt aspirations, his works teach us to understand better the essence of human relations, passions and conflicts. " He was not of an age, but for all times" - said Ben Johnson and it is really true, his works have became eternal.

And now we'd like to remind you some facts from W.Shakespeare's biography (слайд№3).

P1.W. Shakespeare was born in the heart of England in Stratford-on-Avon in April 1564. This picturesque town situated on the river Avon is visited yearly by thousands of people desirous to see the birthplace of W. Shakespeare (слайд№4)

W. Shakespeare was the 3^rd child of 8 children of John Shakespeare and his wife Mary Arden. His parents were plain country people.
We know very little about the early life of William, but we know exactly that he studied at a grammar school, learned Latin and loved reading very much (слайд№5).
We know, when he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer's daughter, who was 26. They had 3 children (two girls and a boy, his son died at the age of 11).
But at the age of 21 William Shakespeare left his town for London (слайд№6).
P2. In London he joined a group of actors, which was called "The Lord Chamberlain's Men".
At first he only helped actors and them began writing plays for them. They became very successful.
In 1598 they built their own theatre " The Globe", which was very unusual, because it had a round shape. Moreover, there was no scenery and no curtain; there were no intervals between scenes. And what more, women were not allowed to act, so plays were played by boys (слайд№7).
P3. W. Shakespeare became very popular, famous, successful and wealthy. But in 1607 he stopped acting and moved to Stratford. And in 1616 at the age of 51 on his birthday he died. He was buried in a family church in his own town (слайды№8-14).
Love and death, friendship and treason, devotion and lie are the main ideas of his plays. Because of this plays have been still performed all over the world today and read and loved by people for many years. (Видеофильм).

Hostess. And now, dear friends, let's dive into the fantastic world of poetry by W. Shakespeare. Some sonnets by the author will be performed by the pupils of the 11^th form.

Host. Dear friends! Today we are going to show you some scenes from "Romeo and Juliet" a very famous romantic tragedy about 2 young people who fall in love with each other and continue to love each other although their families the Montague's and the Capulet's are enemies.

"There has never been a sadder story than this story of Juliet and Romeo" said one of the heroes of the play.

The story of 'Romeo and Juliet' takes place in the north of Italy in the city of Verona just four or five days but it makes the emotion of the play feel especially strong.

Hostess .It is a very exciting story about beautiful love which teaches us to be tolerant to each other, understand real human relations better ,passions and

value love above all.

Now I'd like to introduce you the main characters of the story.

The Capulet family- Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet, Nurse (looks after Juliet);

The Montague family- Lord Montague, Lady Montague, Romeo, Mercutio (friend of Romeo).

ROMEO AND JULIET

Act 1

Host .the first scene takes place at the Capulet's house at night .The family is celebrating the 14^th birthday of Juliet. Romeo and his friend Mercutio are

Entering the house with masks.

The melody "Love THEME" from the film "Romeo and Juliet" sounds.

Romeo. Let me carry a torch. I don't want to dance. I am heavy with sadness, so I shall carry a light.

M e r c u t i o. No, gentle Romeo. You must dance.

Romeo. Not me. My heart is so heavy. I cannot move.

Mercutio. Come on. We are late already.

Romeo. I have a terrible feeling that something will happen tonight. Something will begin at this party.

Capulet. Welcome, gentlemen. I'm sure the ladies will all want you. Oh, I remember the days when I wore a mask to parties and could whisper things in a pretty lady's ear.

Romeo. Who is that lady dancing with the man over there?

Mercutio. I don't know.

Romeo. She shines like a jewel in the night - her beauty is too precious for this earth. Next to the other women, she looks like a snowy dove in a group of crows. When the dance is over, I shall watch where she stands. If I could touch her hand…

(Romeo is dancing with Juliet.)

Romeo. I know I should not touch your hand. It is too perfect for my rough touch. But my lips are ready to smooth away that touch with a gentle kiss.

Juliet. Good sir, you are unkind to your hand.

Romeo. Let our lips do what hands do. Let me kiss you.

Don't move, while I kiss you! You have taken away my sin with your lips!

Juliet. Then now my lips have the sin they have taken from yours! Romeo. Sin from my lips? That is terrible! Give me sin back.

Juliet. You kiss perfectly - as if you had learned it from a book!

Nurse. Madam, your mother wants to speak to you.

Romeo. Who is her mother?

Nurse. Her mother, young man, is the lady of the house. She's a good lady. And I am Nurse to her daughter - the young lady that you were talking to just now. I tell you, the man who wins her love will have plenty of money!

Romeo. She is a Capulet! Now my life is in the hands of my enemy!

Mercutio. Let's go. The party is over.

Capulet. Thank you for coming and good night, gentlemen.

Juliet. Come here, Nurse. Who is that gentleman - the man who wouldn't dance?

Nurse. I don't know.

Juliet. Go and ask his name, Nurse. If he is married I think I will die!

Nurse. His name is Romeo, and he is a Montague! He is only son of your great enemy.

Juliet. The only man I have ever loved is from the only family I have ever hated!

I fell in love with him without knowing who he is. And now it is too late. Oh, what a way to fall in love for the first time!

Nurse. Come on, let's go. The guests have all gone home.

Act 2

Host. The events take place at night in the garden beneath a window of the Capulet's house. Romeo is standing under the balcony. Juliet opens the window above, looks out and then come into the balcony.

The melody "Moon River" from the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" sounds.

Romeo. Oh, what is the light coming through the window?

The window is east and Juliet is the sun. Rise, beautiful sun, and kill the jealous moon! The moon is pale and sick with sadness because you are more beautiful than her. It is my lady! Oh, it is my love! She looks as if she wants to say something. Shall I say something to her? No, she is not talking to me. She is talking to the stars. If her eyes shone in the sky, they would shine so brightly that all the birds would sing. They would think that it was day, not night.

Juliet. Come on, Romeo! Come on, Romeo, you will turn my night into day. Come on night, give me my Romeo. And when I die, take him and turn him into little stars. He will make my sky so beautiful that all the world will be in love with night. And no one will care about the sun anymore, because it will seem too bright and ugly.

Romeo. She speaks. Oh, speak again, bright angel.

Juliet. Oh Romeo, why does your name have to be Romeo? Tell me that Montague is not your father, and that is it not your name. if you won't do that, just promise to be my love, and I shall no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo. Just call me "love", and I shall never be Romeo again.

Juliet. Who is that, hiding in the night and listening my private talk?

Romeo. I cannot tell you my name. My name is as enemy to you.

Juliet. You gave only said a few words, but I know you voice already. Aren't you Romeo, Montague? How did you get here, and why did you come? And if my family find you here, they will kill you.

Romeo. Love's light wings helped me to fly over the walls. Love is brave enough to try anything - so your family will not stop me.

Juliet. Do you love me? Tell me honestly.

Romeo. Lade, I swear be the moon.

Juliet. Oh, don't swear by the moon, which changes all through the month. I don't want your love to be changeable like the moon. If you must swear, swear by yourself. And I'll believe you.

Romeo. Oh wonderful night! I am afraid that this is all a dream. It is too perfect to be true.

Juliet. I shall just say one thing, dear Romeo, and then we must say good night. If you are honourable with your love, and want to marry me, I will send a messenger to you tomorrow. Tell the messenger when and where we shall be married. And I shall come to you. I will give you my life, and follow you throughout the world.

Romeo. The night is a thousand times darker without your light! Lovers are like schoolchildren. When they are about to see each other, they are as excited as children coming home from school. But when they to say goodbye, they are like children in the morning, on their way to school. Slow and heavy.

Juliet. My Romeo.

Romeo. My love. What time tomorrow will you send a messenger to me?

Juliet. By nine o'clock. It is almost morning. I should make you go. Good night, good night. It is so hard to leave you.

Romeo. Good night my love.

Act 3

Host. The events take place in the church at the Juliet's grave.

The melody "Gabriel's Oboe" from the film "The Mission" sounds.

Romeo. The stars want to keep us apart. Well Juliet I will die with you tonight. Death, you have eaten the dearest thing on earth. Oh my love, my wife. Death may have taken away your beauty. My body is tired of life. Eyes, look for the last time. Arms, hold your love for the last time.

(He takes out the bottle of poison and drinks it.)

Poison works well. And so, with a kiss, I die.

Juliet. Where is my Romeo? What's this? A bottle in my true love's hand? Poison, I see, has brought him to his end. Oh, you have drunk it all, and not left a friendly drop to help me too. I will kiss your lips. Perhaps there is some poison left on them that will make me die. Your lips are warm! Someone is coming! Then I shall be quick. Oh, happy knife, this is where you will stay now. Stay there, and let me die.

( The Capulet's family is entering the church.)

Capulet. There has never been a sadder story than this story of Juliet and her Romeo.

Hostess. The song "Ave Maria" by Schubert is performed by pupil of the 11^th form.

AVE MARIA!

MAIDEN MILD!

Listen to a maiden's prayer!

Thou canst hear though from the wild,

Thou canst save amid despair.

Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,

Though banished, outcast and reviled -

Maiden! Hear a maiden's prayer;

Mother, hear a suppliant child!

Ave Maria! Undefiled!

The flinty couch we now must share

Shall seem this down of eider piled,

The murky cavern's heavy air
