PROCEDURE

I. Introduction

T: Look at the blackboard and guess what the theme of our lesson is. What else can you say about this list?

Hot dog

Egg

Apple

Lemon

Tomato

Hamburger

Yoghurt

Fish

Omelette

Orange

Dessert

P: The theme of our lesson is "Healthy Food". But there is a contradiction here: not all kinds of food are useful to our life.

T: What are they?

P: They are hot dogs and hamburgers.

T: Today we'll continue speaking about food in our life. At our today's lesson we'll have to summarize our theme "Healthy food".

Warming up

  1. For a start let's play a game "Name 5"

T: Name five:

  • things to eat (bread, soup, pizza, hot dog, ice cream)

  • things to drink (juice, water, tea, coffee, milk)

  • things round in form (apple, water-melon, peas, plate, pan)

  • things for cooking meals (saucepan, knife, cutting board, spoons, pan)

  • things made from milk (yoghurt, butter, cheese, sour cream, ice cream)

  • yellow fruits (banana, lemon, melon, apricot, pear)

  • green vegetables (cucumber, onion, pepper, cabbage, lettuce)

2. And now imagine you have to invent a fantastic plant. Describe it.

P1: My bush is named "Borsch". There are potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbages on it. You can gather all ingredients in one bush.

P2: My plant is named "Fruit salad". All ingredients are in one tree. You can also cook "fruit jam" or "compote".

T: Any ideas?

P3: Wonderful water-melon: inside - fruit jelly, instead of seeds - candies.

T: Is it possible?

P3: Sure, if you water it with lemonade and honey.

II. Main part of the lesson

Check on homework

T: Your hometask was to make up your own soundtrack to the fragment of a cartoon film. So, group 1 has a fragment from "Трое из Простоквашино". Group 2 has a fragment from "Мужество попугая Кеши". Well, let's see what you have done. (…..)

T: OK, you worked well today. I'd like to thank you for your work.

Reading and Writing

T: Today we'll speak about food and eating habits. Some people don't eat much sugar or don't drink coffee or tea. Some people eat spicy, hot food, vegetarians don't eat meat. Let's read some little texts to know more about eating habits in these countries. (HO1)

T: Look at your texts and answer my questions.

In which country/countries do they…

  • drink lots of coffee?

  • like sausages?

  • eat rice with every meal?

  • not eat in the street?

  • usually eat dinner with their families?

  • sometimes eat with their hands?

  • never eat with their hands?

T: And now look at this photo file and complete the article about people's eating habits in Britain. (HO2)

T: Are you ready? Tell us about British eating habits. (2 pupils retell the article)

Grammar

1. T: You know that sometimes we use "some" or "any" in our speech. Why? Read the dialogue and

  • complete the rule

  • use the prompts to act out similar dialogues. (HO3)

A: Is there any milk in the fridge?

B: No, I'm afraid there isn't any milk. Would you like some cola instead?

A: Yes, please. I'd love some. Can I have some ice too?

B: Yes, sure.

cheese - ham - bread

bananas - strawberries - sugar

T: What can you say?

P: We use some in the affirmative sentences; we use any in the negative and interrogative forms.

T: OK. Act out your own dialogues. Work in groups.

2. T: And now let's complicate your task. Look at the board and correct the mistakes. Explain your answer.

1. I'd like some banana please.

2. I'm thirsty. I'd like a water.

3. How many honey do you need?

4. I'd like some sugars in my tea.

5. Could I have a butter please?

6. Would you like a glass of juice?

7. Do you like a cup of tea? Yes, please.

8. How much cherries is there in our fridge?

Speaking

1. Discussion

T: Listen and read the opinions of some pupils (on the board). Which of them do you agree with? Why?

  • I prefer home-made meals. My mum and granny are excellent cooks and their cooking is something I'd like you to taste! (Mary)

  • If you ask me, hamburgers and pizza are the best. When I am busy, it's very convenient to me to go to the nearest shop for ready-made foods. (Igor)

  • It doesn't matter what I eat. If I feel like eating, I eat what I can find in my fridge. Hunger doesn't choose. (Peter)

P1: I agree with Peter. It is not important for me what to eat if I am hungry.

P2: No, you shouldn't do it. It is necessary to take care of your health!

P1: But it doesn't mean that we have junk food in our fridge. My mum has no time to cook herself, so we buy ready-made food.

P3: I agree with Mary. I prefer home-made meals too. It seems to me that if you cook yourself you can be sure all the products are fresh and clean. You can choose only healthy ingredients for your dishes.

2. Role-play

T: There is a saying "Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you who you are». Let's discuss it. How do we call a person who eats no meat?

P: A vegetarian.

T: One of the groups will represent vegetarians, the other - those who like to eat meat. Give your arguments for / against the statement "We can't live without meat".

G1: Certain types of meat contain a high amount of fat. Too much fat in your diet can cause health problems like heart attacks and cancer. Some people do not eat meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals. The others don't eat meat because they believe it is too expensive. We'd like to show you a little dialogue.

(acting out a dialogue)

G2: Meat is high in protein, which is an important element of food that people need to stay alive. Our brain is need of protein too. We think we all need food, but we must keep on a balanced diet. A balanced diet consists of all the things you need to be healthy and to have enough energy during the day.

I know a girl who only eats natural food; she takes a lot of vitamins. She is a vegetarian. I've never seen anybody who looks so ill! I like good food and I think most healthy food is really tasteless. My ill-looking friend is horrified by what I eat; her breakfast is a piece of wholemeal bread with a cup of herbal tea and then for lunch he has rice- and in the evenings, beans and a salad. She says it's very good for her, but I'm not sure. There's nothing wrong with being healthy and keeping fit but with some people it's about a religion. But tastes differ! Maybe she wants to be a model…

T: OK. What else proverbs and sayings about food do you know? Let's remember all proverbs you know. Each correct sentence gets one point. The group with the most points is the winner.

  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

  • Eat at pleasure, drink with measure.

  • Hungry as a hunter.

  • Eat to live, not live to eat.

  • After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile.

  • You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.

  • Half a loaf is better than none.

  • Don't put all your eggs into one basket etc.

T: Group…is the winner.

3. Creating a radio advertisement (HO4)

T: And the last task for you for today's lesson is to create a radio advertisement for the restaurants. Group 1 makes an advertisement for "McDonald's", group two - for the family restaurant "Spangles". Start each paragraph with:

  • Come to…

  • The food is…

  • Bring your…

  • We're open…

III. Summing up

T: What useful information did you get from today's lesson?

To sum up let's make a cinquain. At the beginning of our theme we have made a cinquain.

Food

delicious, tasteless

to boil, to fry, to grill

we are what we eat

meal

And now let's make two cinquains. Group 1- for healthy food, group 2 - for junk food.

T: I thank you for your work. You worked very hard. The most active were….For the next lesson your home assignment is to prepare for computer testing on our topic "Healthy food".
