Now, I think, you are ready to take an excursion tour to London and to see some of the places of interest, which attract attention of all the tourists. And our Picture Map of London will help us.

A visitor going to London expects to see a giant city, but the real size of London impresses even those who have been well informed. Greater London territory covers an area of 720 square miles. London is more than 20 centuries old. It was mentioned by the Romans. They called it Londinium. This word is of Celtic origin and its meaning "Lake fortress". But why a lake fortress? We know London stands on the river, not on the lake? Floods happened often and water covered all the territory, making a great lake, excepting the hill. And high hill which was never covered with water became the place where the first fortress was built.

There were many beautiful buildings in medieval City of London, but most of them were wooden. London of the middle of the 17th century was a city of narrow, dirty streets. Indeed, the streets were so narrow that it was often possible for a person at a window on one side to shake hands with a neighbor on the other side. There was little light and air. It is no wonder that epidemics were common.

The greatest epidemics of the Plague broke out in 1665. It was a sad time for London. Every house in which were sick people was shut up, and no one was allowed to go in and out and the door of the house was marked with a red cross. The following year the Great Fire took place. It broke out late on a Saturday night in a street not far from London Bridge. The summer had been dry, a hot east wind blew and the fire spread quickly. The fire burned for 5 days and destroyed the greater part of the city. After the fire the City could not be reconstructed, it had to be built again.

A commission of 6 architects was organized for this business and Sir Christopher Wren was the most talented of them. According to his plan, the houses in the main streets of London had to be four-storeyed, in smaller streets three-storeyed, in lanes and alleys two -storeyed. It was forbidden to build wooden houses in the City of London. Fleet. Street, famous throughout the world as the centre of British news services, was one of the main streets of the city in the 17th century.

St. Paul's Cathedral was the greatest work of Sir Christopher Wren.

poem "Westminster Bridge" ( William Word Sworth)

Earth has not anything to show fair:

Dull would he be of soul who could pass by.

A sight so touching in its Majesty:

This City now both like a garment wear.

The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,

Ships, towers, domes, theatres and temples lie

Open up to the fields and to the sky:

All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.

From Leisure (by Davie)

What is this life if, full of care

We have no time to stand and stare

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

A poor life this is, if full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

Teacher: There are more than 80 parks in London. The most famous of them are St. James's Park, Regent's Park, Hyde Park and others.

Hyde Park is known as national London Park. In 16 century it was the place where Royal family hunted.

Englishmen like to spend their time in the parks, small and large. They always have time to stand and stare.
