Astrakhan.

Geographical Position and the Surface.

Astrakhan is an economic, administrative and cultural centre of the Lower Volga Region. It is divided into 11 administrative and 4 town districts: Chernoyarski, Krasnoyarski, Yenotayevski, Kharabalinski, Akhtubinski, Privolzhski, Kamyzyakski, Ikryaninski, Limanski, Volodarski, Narimanovski, Leninski, Kirovski, Sovetski,Trusovski. There are 5 towns: Narimanov, Kamyzyak, Akhtubinsk, Znamensk, Kharabali in Astrakhan Region.

Astrakhan region is situated in the south- east of the Eastern European plain in the zone of desert and semi-desert. It borders on Kazakhstan in the east, on Volgograd region in the north-west, on Kalmuck Republic in the west and it is washed by the Caspian Sea in the South and south-west.

Astrakhan Region territory covers 44,1 thousand square kilometers. The region belongs to the Povolzhski economic district. The geographical position is peculiar: Astrakhan region lies on the boundary of European and Asia: railway and automobile roads, air transport tie our region with the other parts of Russia and with the neighboring and distant foreign countries. The river Volga( on which Astrakhan stands) gives the exit to the 5 seas. The Volga is the longest rivers in Europe. It is 3530 km long.

The landscape is mainly represented by desert plains complicated with sand, hills, dry hollows, lakes, etc. Volga- Akhtubinskaya flood-lands crosses the desert plain from the north-west to the south-east and its water streams flow into the Caspian Sea and form vast delta. There are meadows, woods, thick overgrowth of reeds, bright flowers of lotos in the bounds of delta and flood-lands, The highest mountain is Bogdo, it is 149,6 meters high.

We can find some hills in our region. They are so-called Barovskiye Bugry. S There are 2 points of view about their origin: the first is that they have river origin and the second point is that these hills are ancient barkhans that were formed after stepping back of Khvalynski sea and undergone some changing under the influence of the sea and Volga waters.
