There is something about the English Channel that has always fascinated the human race and it has always played a special role in British history. The sea itself has always been important to mankind but the Channel often created a barrier between Great Britain and the Continent. This barrier has existed for more than 12,000 years and the desire to break it has occupied the minds of many people for almost two hundred years.

The construction of the tunnel is perhaps the most incredible engineering project of the 20th century. In fact its completion was called a "technical triumph".

However, the first proposal to build a Channel Tunnel appeared in 1802, when a French engineer presented his project for two tunnels to cross it. Historians say Napoleon was interested in that plan. But Napoleon was more interested in fighting the British than in linking the two countries, and shortly afterwards a new war between England and France began. There were many other plans to build a tunnel but unfortunately all of them failed. It was not until after the last war that Britain and France began seriously considering the project. On the 12th February, 1986, Mrs. Thatcher and President Mitterrand signed the Franco-British Treaty which allowed the construction and the operation of the Channel Tunnel. The tunnel was completed eight years later.

It is now very quick and easy to cross the Channel. You don't have to book a ticket. The Channel Tunnel trains operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. You can now cross the Channel in thirty-five minutes. At last the great barrier has been broken.

In 1996, the American Society of Civil Engineers, with Popular Mechanics, selected the tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

A Warm Reception Promised at the Ice Hotel

QUEBEC CITY Monday January 1 (Reuters). - Canadian businessmen opened on Monday North America's first Ice Hotel and said 1,000 tourists had already signed up to spend a night in a chilly building made of ice and snow.

The hotel built of 4,500 tons of snow and 25 tons of ice, opened outside Quebec City in a place overlooking the St. Lawrence river and the Montmorency Falls which are higher than world well known Niagara Falls. New Year's Day opening followed a weekend snowstorm.

"The hotel is fully booked with 22 people in our six suites," Ice Hotel communications director Helene Barbeau told Reuters. "The staff unveiled the hotel on New Year's Eve and even slept in the ice beds," she said in an interview.

The Ice Hotel's facilities include a bar, a cinema and two art galleries, with exhibits made of sculpted ice about Canada's Great North and Inuit people, as well as executive suites complete with an ice bed. The cost - $100 per one person a night - includes a hot breakfast and a sleeping bag on top of animal fur for the ice bed.

The Canadian structure cost C$750,000 to build, including C$125,000 from the Quebec provincial government.

Most of the 1,000 people who have reserved rooms for the season are Americans who come from as far away as Texas, Florida, California and Arkansas, but some also are tourists from South Africa, Japan, France, Germany and Britain. Those who reserved for Monday's opening came from New York, Maine, Washington and Montreal.

"We also expect 40,000 people to visit the site this winter," Barbeau said adding that the wedding of a local celebrity is to be held at the hotel on January 27.

The Ice Hotel will stay open for three months before the ice and snow melt in early April.

The idea of an ice hotel is being imported from Sweden, where what was advertised as the world's first ice hotel was built about ten years ago in Jukkasjarvi, a drive of seven hours from Stockholm.

The Quebec Ice Hotel has a surface of 10,760 square feet, one quarter the size of its Swedish counterpart. It has a staff of 32 people.

The Ice Hotel intends to move permanently to the Duchesnay resort west of Quebec City next year. The new Ice Hotel should be able to accommodate 85 guests. It also will be the size of two football fields, four times larger than the current Ice Hotel and comparable in size to its Swedish counterpart.

"People will be able to do cross-country skiing, snowmobile riding and winter fishing," Barbeau said.

A. Barbara Cartland became the world's best-selling author composing her romantic tales. Happy endings were a must for the Queen of Romance. Each title sold about a million of copies and there was a new title every two weeks. "For20 years, I've done a book a fortnight. Without fail, 600 words a day. Nobody else has done that," she once said.

В Cartland was born one of three children in Birmingham on July 9, 1901, in an upper-class but very poor family. Her father died in World War I. She published her first novel, Jigsaw, in 1923. The glamorous young novelist received marriage proposals from 49 men before she married a man of one of Britain's noble families in 1927. This summer holiday, my friend Irvin and I wanted to do something different. Instead of wasting our time staying at home watching TV and playing computer games as usual, we decided to go camping.

After getting permission from our parents, we began planning our trip. We made a list of all the food and supplies we would need and spent an entire afternoon searching for the best place to buy our camping equipment. In the end, our tent, our tent, stove and sleeping bags cost a lot of money, but it was worth it.

A Carl Lewis was born on July 1. 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama. Introduced to track and field by his athletic parents, Lewis first broke the long jump record while in high school. In 1984, he returned home with 4 gold medals after his first Olympics. Later, participating in the Summer Olympics of 1988, 1992 and 1996, he won another 5 gold medals and a silver one. He was also named ' athlete of the year' 3 years in a row by Track and Field magazine and 'sportsman of the century' by the International Olympic Committee.

B Born October 14, 1952 in Vladimir, Nikolai Adrianov first signed up for gymnastic classes at the age of 11. Having difficulty balancing gymnastics and all that homework his teachers gave him, he almost quit, but Tolkachov, his coach, encouraged and helped him to go on trying. Between 1971 and 1980, he was at the top pf many international gymnastics competitions, including the World Championships. He participated in the 1972, 1976 and the 1980 Olympic Games in which he won 15 medals, the most a man has won in Olympic competition. In 2001 he was introduced into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

C Oksana Baiul was born in Ukraine on February 26, 1977. She began skating at the age of four and although orphaned at 13, she was cared for by her coach. When he left the country, she lived with her new coach, Galina Zmievskaya. At 15, Oksana won the World Figure Skating Championship and a couple of years later, participated in the 1994 Winter Olympics. She almost missed one of the competitions due to a warm-up accident. However, she was not severely injured and went on to win an Olympic gold medal.

D Michael Gross was born as the best swimmer between the 1981 and 1988. Born in Frankfurt on June 17, 1964, people referred to him as "The Albatross" because of his extremely long arms. At the age of 19, Gross set his first world record, then set 4 world records in four different events over the next three years. He also won two world titles and four European titles. He competed in the Summer Olympics of 1984 and 1988 in which he won six medals. During the 1984 Olympics, his freestyle relay team was defeated by the Americans, earning the American tem the title of "Grossbusters"

Alexander Vereinov

History has proven time and time again that there are people who can rise above difficulties and face great challenges in a way that is inspiring to all. Many people with serious disabilities often manage to not only look past their condition, but even go on to achieve greatness. Two shining examples of this are Ludwig van Beethoven and Helen Keller.

Another brilliant case is that of Alexander Vereinov, a famous Russian artist. Born in 1956, Vereinov suffers from cerebral palsy, a condition which seriously affects body and muscle movement. His first attempts at painting began at a special hospital for children suffering from cerebral palsy, where he spent his childhood. Since he had no control of his hands, Verienov used his mouth to hold his pain brushes. The problem was that the people at the hospital were afraid he would hurt himself, so he wasn't allowed to paint; which is why he did all his work of art at night, in a secret.

Today, Alexander Verienov is an internationally recognized mouth artist, who has produced many stunning originals as well as reproductions of other well-known paintings are nearly impossible to tell from the original.

However, Verienov'c activity does not end here. Together with Maxim Goubanov, a Russian philanthropist, he works towards raising money for Alexander Verienov Disabled Russian Citizens Fund. This is an organization that aims to provide wheelchairs, medicine, food and other necessities to disabled people who do not have enough means to support themselves. Indeed, Alexander Vereinov is an inspirational example of being able to use your inner strength and determination to become successful and then use this success to help others.

During the baking hot months of the summer holidays my mother and I used to escape to one of the scattered lakes north of Prince Albert. In its magic surroundings we used to spend the long summer days in the open air, swimming and canoeing or just lying dreaming in the sun. In the evening the lake was always a bright, luminous grey after the unbelievable sunset colors had faded.

The last summer before we returned to England was particularly enchanted. For one thing, I was in love for the first time. No one will ever convince me that one cannot be in love at fifteen. I loved then as never since, with all my heart and without doubts or reservations or pretence.

My boyfriend Don worked in Saskatoon, but the lake was ''his place'' - the strange and beautiful wilderness drew him with an obsessive urgency, so I suspected it was not to see me that he got on his motor-cycle as many Fridays as he possibly could, and drove three hundred-odd miles along the pitted prairie roads to spend the weekends at our place.

Sometimes he couldn't come, and the joy would go out of everything until Monday, when I could start looking forward to Friday again. He could never let us know in advance, as we were too far from civilization to have a phone or even a telegraph service. Three hundred miles in those conditions is quite a journey. Besides, Don was hard up, and sometimes worked overtime at weekends.

One Friday night a storm broke out. I lay in bed and listened to the thunder and the rain beating on the roof. Once I got up and stood looking out over the treetops, shivering. I tried not to expect Don that night hoping he would have enough sense to wait until the storm ended. Yet in my frightened thoughts I couldn't help imagining Don fighting the storm. His motorbike, which had always looked to me so heavy and solid, seemed in my thoughts frail enough to be blown onto its side by the first gust that struck it. I thought of Don pinned under it, his face pressed into the mud.

I crawled back into bed, trying to close my throat against the tears. But when my mother, prompted by the deep sympathy and understanding between us, came in to me, she kissed my cheek and found it wet.

"Don't get upset, Jane,'' she said softly. ''He may still come.''

When she had tucked me in and gone, I lay thinking about Don, about the danger of the roads. You couldn't ride or walk along them safely after heavy rain; your feet would slip from under you. The roads in Northern Canada are not like the friendly well-populated English ones, where there are always farmhouses within walking distance and cars driving along them day and night.

It was hours later, that I suddenly realized the sound of the roaring engine were real. The storm was dying.
