Grade: 4"A" Date: 24.02.16

Theme: "The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain

Class reading

Aims:

  • To develop students` reading comprehension

  • To develop listening and speaking skills

Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to

  • Name the main heroes of the story

  • Define the main idea of the story

  • Use new words from the story to make sentences

Means:

  • Fly-high 4 Pupil`s Book (The extract from "The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain)

  • CD-player, computer

Organizational moment:

  • Greetings

  • Calling the roll

  • Checking up the homework (2-3 min)

Warm-up:

  1. Look at the cover of the book and say what you see and what it might be about

Presentation:

New words: palace poor beggar gates beg soldier rich servant cheap pauper

Procedure: Teacher presents new words by giving students prompts and making students guess the meanings of the words. Students open their copybooks and write new words down. Then, they make a glossary.

Ex: beggar

Synonym for "very poor, penniless"

He is beggar and he has no money

(Students guess that the word means «нищий»)

Group work

  1. Complete the tasks by answering the questions and make up a chart

Procedure: Students are divided in groups of six. Each student gets a task. After they have finished, they are to put their answers to the bloom`s taxonomy chart.

T: Tell the names of the main heroes (The 1st group)

T: Tell what Edward is and what Tom is and where they live. (the 2nd group)

Understanding

T: Find out what was their agreement about. (the 1st group)

T: Define why Edward would like to be a poor boy.(the 2nd group)

Applying

T: Show your favourite part from the story. Role-play it.

Analyzing

T: Divide the story into three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion

Evaluating

T: Select your favourite hero and describe him

Creating

T: Write a continuation of the story
