" ST. VALENTINE'S DAY" PARTY

Teacher: Love! Friendship! Happiness! Affection! Romance!

There're not so many days in a year when we pronounce these pleasant words.

Today we can say such words because it is an unusual and special day - Saint Valentine's Day. This happy holiday celebrates friendship, love and romance.

Valentine's Day is a good time to think of others who are important to us - Moms and Dads, grandparents, sisters and brothers, friends and classmates, teachers.

It's a nice time to tell them how much you like them and how you feel.

Today, you have an excellent chance to plunge into the atmosphere of love and friendship, to take part in party- games, to practice the use of some pleasant words and expressions on this special occasion.

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

I. It's here again, the day when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours, and even the office staff will exchange greetings of affection, undying love or satirical comment.

II. St. Valentine' Day, February 14, has been a customary day for choosing sweethearts and exchanging love-tokens from time immemorial. The method of choosing sweethearts on St. Valentine's Day varied in different times and places. It could be a serious matter leading to marriage, or it could be a kind of a game. Countless generations of young people have acknowledged St. Valentine as the friend and patron of love.

I. What kind of holiday is St. Valentine's Day?

II. St. Valentine's Day is a holiday which is celebrated in Great Britain, the USA, and in many European countries. St. Valentine's Day has roots in several legends. This is the legend of how St. Valentine's Day began.

I. According to one story, St. Valentine was a kindly priest named Valentine. The Roman Emperor Claudius made a law against marring. He thought that marriage made man want to stay at home instead of fighting wars. The priest decided to marry young couples secretly. This story goes back to about 200 AD.

II. Another legend tells us that Valentine was a Christian priest in the Roman empire three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ. He had been thrown in prison for his teaching. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he performed a miracle - he cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness the night before he was executed. But he had written a letter to the girl, signing it "From your Valentine".

I. Some people believe that St. Valentine was the saint patron of birds. There also was another St. Valentine who was a good friend to children.

There are many other legends about how St. Valentine's Day started, and no one knows for sure whether any of them are true. Also, there are a lot of traditions of celebrating St. Valentine's Day in different countries.

Teacher: Today we'll see one of them. It is the game "Love from the first sight".

The tasks of the competition

(Participants - 7 boys and 7 girls)

I. Making a couple. (Find your half).

Each of our participants has got half of a heart. They were given some time to find the person who has the matching piece. So, today the God of love Cupid has shoot his arrows into the hearts of our girls and boys and helped them to make the couples. Now we shall see these wounded people. Come in, please.

II. Introduction of participants.

You see how beautiful our girls are and how handsome our boys are. They have already made their choice but they don`t know anything about each other. So the second task of our festival is called «Hello, It`s me»

III. The next humorous competition we are going to have is called

«The Princess on the peas.» You know that our girls are very beautiful, kind and what not. Now we shall see how sensible they are. Count the buttons by means of the most sensible parts of your body

IV. Draw faces of lovers. (Антонова, Котова, Корыбут, Берестова)

The next contest is to draw faces of lovers. I give you sheets of paper and on each of them you must draw a half of man's face and a half of woman's face. I won't say the names of these famous persons aloud, they are written on the paper. You have some minutes to draw the faces, and when you are ready, we'll try to guess who they are.

While some of our participants are checking their skills in drawing the other ones will try to find their beloved by means of examining their ears.

When people are in love, they want to say pleasant words to their sweethearts. Now, boys and girls you have a chance to say such words to each other, the words of love, admiration, mysterious feelings.

A pair, consisting of a boy and a girl can take part in this contest. You should stand face to face at a distance of ten steps. You have to go to each other in turn and say compliments to each other.

Girls and boys should be not only beautiful but smart and intelligent as well.

So you are supposed to pass through a test in order to check your IQ.

For each right answer you will get a prize.

1. When was the first Valentine written?

It was written in 1400 by Duke Charles of Orleans. He was French and he was captured by the English during the war. While he sat in prison in the Tower of London, he wrote poems for his wife. In one of them he mentioned Valentine and Cupid.

2. What symbols of St. Valentine's Day do you know?

They are special cards with romantic messages, Cupids of love, hearts, flowers and pairs of birds, ribbons, roses and etc.

3. What do you know about love apples?

In the 19^th century many Valentines were shaped like tomatoes. At that time tomatoes were grown as flowers and were not eaten. They were considered beautiful and were called love apples. They were the perfect symbol for a special Valentine.

4. What do people do on St. Valentine's Day?

They send a postcard with the words of love to a person, make special presents in the form of a heart and give roses and other flowers on the 14^th of February.

5. How to decorate the Valentine?

Lace symbolizes a net for catching one's heart. If you get a Valentine with a piece of lace, it's clear that a person who sends it must be crazy about you.

A ribbon means that the person is tied up.

Hearts are the most common romantic symbols, denote eternal love.

Red roses are also used as a love emblem.

6. Who is the Roman god of love?

Cupid, a charming boy with a bow and arrows. He was a perfect archer and was said to shoot his arrows into the human hearts. The wounded persons immediately fell in love.

7. When was Valentine executed?

On February 14, 269 AD.

What is a pantomime?A pantomime is an act or a short play in which the actor moves and gestures but does not speak. Pantomiming is the ability to use gestures only, without words, to tell something. So picture these things.

In a dream, you become a caged monkey. Eat banana and perform for the passers-by.

Make believe that you are a hungry frog trying to catch a fly.

Put on your make -up while looking into a mirror.

Role play a peacock showing off to visitors.
