Now let's read the text and check your answers. How many correct answers do you have? Who knows about American school more?

Text.

My name is Noriko. I'm from Tokyo but now we live in San Francisco, California. A lot of my family live here so we came to San Francisco to be closer to them. Of course, I know that the family is important, but at first it was very difficult, I didn't like leaving all my friends at my old school in Tokyo.

Now, after a year in ninth grade, I've made lots of new friends here at Palmers Park High School, San Francisco. But I've had some surprise. On my first day at school there were security men at the school doors. They were looking for guns! That was very frightening!

Another surprise was the school timetable. We begin classes at 8 a.m. and finish at 3.15 p.m. lunch is from midday until 1 p.m.! If you want to eat fast food, an American school is the place for you! You can eat hamburgers, pizza and hot dogs every. There are also lots of vending machines in the school sell chocolate, sweets and cola. All the students do sports after school, and they need to! They play baseball, American football and soccer. Soccer is the name for football here.

Now I'm more positive about San Francisco. I've learned a lot of English. I've got two cultures now, and that's great. I'm also going to learn to drive soon. You can learn to drive when you're fifteen in California. All the eleventh grade students come to school in their cars! But the best thing about the USA is the people because they are really friendly.

Well done, now I would like you to imagine a day in an American school by watching this video.

Before doing the next task I want to tell you some words about a school tradition, which is called "the Pledge of Allegiance". Every classroom has an American flag in it. From elementary to high school, students start each day by standing up and saluting the flag. They put their hands over their hearts and say the "Pledge of Allegiance". This is a promise to the country. It was written by people who came to America over 200 years ago. Saluting the flag helps people think about the United States and its freedom.

You can see it in this video.

And now it's time to answer the questions about the text in your student's books. But you need to read the text once more and you have 3 min.

  1. What did Noriko like about leaving Tokyo?

She had to leave all her friends at her old school in Tokyo.

  1. How long has she been at Palmers Park High School?

  1. What were the security men searching for?

Guns.

  1. What can you eat for lunch at an American?

Hamburgers, pizza and hotdogs every day.

  1. What other things can students eat and drink at an American school?

Chocolate, sweets and cola.

  1. Why does Noriko think the students need to do sport?

Because of all the fast food they eat.

  1. How does she feel about living in San Francisco now? Why?

She is more positive about it.

  1. What is she going to learn to do soon?

To drive

3. Активизация лексических навыков.

Now let's learn some new words. First, read through the definitions and read the article again to find the words for the definitions. Now we'll check the answers.

Good job. I would like you to imagine a day in an American school by watching this video.

Well done. Now you have 5 min. to read some information about Japanese schools. (карточки)

Most Japanese schools run on a trimester schedule. The academic year begins in April and ends the following March, with breaks for summer, winter and spring separating the three terms. Uniforms are required and there are extensive rules for hair styles, shoes, socks, skirt length, make-up, accessories, and more.

In each classroom, the average number of students is 29 with five or six computers to share between them. Students in Japan study academic subjects, such as Japanese language, math, reading, social studies, music, and art, and they also receive moral education. Moral education involves teaching students about health and safety, living a disciplined life, courtesy, understanding and confidence, public manners, and environmental awareness. There are no custodians, the students clean the school. There are 240 school days in Japan, 160 in the U.S.A. Home room teachers eat lunch with their students. School officially starts at 8:30 and ends at 3:20, but students often come much earlier and leave much later. At the beginning of the year the home room teachers in junior high school visit the homes of every single one of their students for a meeting with the parents.
