Better late than never - Лучше поздно, чем никогда.

East or West home is best -

The more haste the worse speed -

Every dog is a lion at home -

Many a good cow has a bad calf -

Such bird, such egg -

As the tree, so the fruit -

1. Use the simple present in the active or passive voice to complete the sentences. Give the Russian equivalents to these proverbs.

  1. A bad beginning (make) a bad ending.

  1. An ox (take) by the horns, and a man by the tongue.

  1. An ill wound (cure), not an ill name.

  1. He that (promise) too much (mean) nothing.

  1. A tree (know) by its fruit.

  2. Bad news (have) wings.

1.

Nothing is lost for asking.

2.

Love is neither bought nor sold.

3.

An oak is not felled with one stroke.

4.

Rome was not built in a day.

5.

He who pleased everyone died before he was born.

6.

Nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest.

8.

A fault confessed is half redressed.

9.

А thing well done is twice done.

  1. The day before yesterday we (invited) to the restaurant by Tom Jenkins:

A are invited

В were invited

С invite

  1. Look! The bridge (repair).

A is being repaired

В is been repaired

С has being repaired

  1. The letter and the parcel (post) tomorrow.

A will be post

В will have been posted

С will be posted

  1. In Greece the Olympic Games (hold) once in four years.

A were held

В are being held

С are held

7. Don't become very upset by trivialities. (Don't cry over...)

8. Don't take risks. (Better safe than sorry.)

EXERCISE 2: Explain one of the proverbs to your classmate. See if he can guess which proverb you are referring to. Remember that your partner may have interpreted the proverb in a different way.

EXERCISE 3: Try to decide which proverb could help you express yourself in the following situations.

1. You make an appointment with your doctor for 6 pm. You arrive at 6.15. He complains that he has been waiting for 15 minutes. What would you say?

He says that he doesn't want to do it because he will miss his favourite television serial. What do you think to yourself?

EXERCISE 4: Working in groups of two or three work out a sketch to perform in front of your class that demonstrates one of the proverbs above. When you organise your sketch remember to keep speaking in English. When you have performed your sketch, see if you classmates can guess which proverb you are referring to.

Teacher's Notes: You will need a class of advanced, enthusiastic students who are willing to participate and contribute to make this lesson successful. Some students will have very different interpretations of the proverbs, although this can give rise to interesting conversations.
