PHYSICALLY ACTIVE READING ACTIVITIES

BELOW ARE SOME IDEAS OF HOW TO PUT A PHYSICAL ELEMENT INTO ALMOST ANY READING ACTIVITY.

  1. THE SS READ THE TEXT IN GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALLY. THEN THE TEACHER READS OUT THE TEXT AND THE SS HAVE TO RAISE THEIR HANDS, STAND UP, SHOUT "stop!" OR CLAP HANDS EVERY TIME THEY HEAR A MISTAKE.

  2. Change the font size of the text to the larger one, cut into strips, tape in a long strip and put it along the SS

  • THE SS CAN READ THE TEXT IN THIS WAY

  • CAN CHOOSE THE WORDS ON THE TOPIC

  • ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

  • MAKE UP THE DIALOGUE

  1. The questions are on their desks while the text or parts of the text are pinned to the walls, so to find the answers the students have to move arund.

  2. Matching paragraphs to the headings. The headings are on the walls with envelopes pinned under them. Students go around and put their parts of the texts into the envelopes or they may put true/false sentences into the special boxes or envelopes, you may also ask students to match questions to the paragraghs (paragrapghs are on the walls), they may put the text in order putting the parts of it into special envelopes numbered from 1 to….

  3. Running dictation.

  4. One person is sitting down has the comprehension questions, he reads them to the partner that goes up to the text to find the answers and gives them back to the person sitting down and he writes them on the answer sheet.

  5. The students read the text or words one by one until the teacher claps once, if the teacher claps twice they read against the clock.

TEACHING READING TIPS

  • MATCH THE WORDS TO THE PICTURES

  • PUT THE WORDS IN ORDER YOU HEAR THEM

  • PUT THE WORDS IN PILES ACCORDING TO THE SYLLABLE.

  • FIRST TEACH THE CONSONANTS, THEN THE VOWELS and then the blends.

  • THE TEACHER MAY HAVE A STUDENT WHO IS VERY GOOD AT READING TO HELP HIM TO CHECK THE STUDENTS' READING

  • THE STUDENTS READ THE WORDS OR EXPRESSIONS ONE BY ONE, IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE THE TEACHER SAYS SORRY! AND THEY START FROM THE BEGINNING.

  • GIVEN A TARGET WORD THE STUDENT IDENTIFIES RHIMING WORDS FROM THE SERIES OF PICTURES OR A LIST OF WORDS

  • WHICH WORDS START THE SAME WAY AS SAD

  • WHAT IS THE FIRST/LAST SOUND IN SIT

  • WHAT SOUNDS ARE THE SAME IN CAT AND POT

  • ARE THE WORDS THE SAME OR DIFFERENT: mat/man
