FROM THE HISTORY OF THE CINEMA

The cinema gives pleasure to millions of people. But when we see a film at the cinema, we don't think of who made it possible. In the year of 1995 people celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the cinematograph. It was in 1893 that a great American engineer Tomas Alva Edison made the first cinema film. He made also a machine to show films.

Some people in France made another machine which could show films, too. The first real film show took place in Paris in 1895. A group of 33 people saw a short film about a train coming to a railway station. In 1903 one of Edison's engineers joined all the known and interesting films into one to make a longer picture. The people who saw this film liked it, and some more films of this kind were made. The viewer could see the actors in the film doing something and talking, but they could hear nothing. The films in those days were silent. Words on the screen explained what was going on and what the actors and actresses were saying. Sometimes there was a man who played the piano during the show.

Of course, these early films were not perfect, still they had a great influence on the public. The «Battleship Potemkin» produced by Sergei Eisenstein was the real triumph.
