So I will be glad to be your guide round the "wheel" of the American history. Let's start from the very beginning.

In the Middle Ages Spain was very interested in new lands. So I made many voyages to discover them. One day I decided to find the seaway to India, which was famous of unknown exotic fruit, vegetables and different kinds of spice.

But my route was mistaken. When I arrived in the Caribbean I thought I landed in India in Asia, so I called the people there "Indians". In fact they were Native Americans.

1: In fourteen hundred and ninety-two

2: Columbus sailed the ocean blue...

1: Let's sing together this old song

2: About the voyage that took him long,

1: About the sailors, those strong brave men.

2: Let's sing and remember them all again!

1: Are you unhappy because you're leaving England?

2: No, I'm not. In England many people were unkind to us because our religion is different. We have a very simple life so people think we're strange. Finally, we decided to sail to America.

1: Land ahoy! There is a land in the distance!

2: I am sure it's a wonderful country for us.

Who are you?

1: We are Pilgrims, the fist white settlers in North America. We came here in 1620 on the ship "Mayflower" from England.

2: We took 66 days to sail to America and when we arrived many of the Pilgrims were sick and weak from the terrible weather. When we landed in America we were worried about Indians and wild animals.

2: But the land was good. Many of the fruits and vegetables were different from those in England. There were also animals to hunt and tasty fish to catch. We started building our first houses.

2: The winter was very cold and it snowed. A lot of people died and finally there were only 52 of us. One day an Indian suddenly appeared.

1: My name is Lizzie and this is John. We are Pilgrims from a far country called England. We came here to start a new life. And who are you?

1: We are Native Americans. We

live in small groups of about 20-50 people. We are very peaceful people, and live by hunting and collecting food. Some of us have farms.

2: So we can teach you how to cultivate the plants that we now eat: potatoes, beans, maize, tomatoes, pineapples, cacao and many more.

After that the Native Americans and the white people smoke a pipe of peace which means friendship. Soon everything went well for the pilgrims. A year later they invited all the Indians to a big meal to thank them for their help. Nowadays this day is celebrated in America every autumn and called "Thanksgiving Day"

When Christopher Columbus discovered the American continent and the first pilgrims landed here, who thought that this was the place where the future of the world would be made! The declaration of independence was proclaimed in. The war with Britain lasted for eighty years. Slavery grew in the South. The 16-th American President Abraham Lincoln had to lead the country through the four terrible years of the Civil War. And he hated slavery.

Good afternoon to you.

Good afternoon, Mr. President.

So, you wanted to see me.

Yes, Mr. President.

You are not American, aren't you?

No, Mr. President.

And you've come to ask me some questions.

That's right, Mr. President.

All right. Stay and ask your questions.

Where were you born, Mr. President?

I was born in Kentucky.

Did you spend all your childhood in Kentucky?

No. When I was seven my family had to leave Kentucky.

We moved to Indiana.

What do you remember of your childhood?

Many, many things. I remember the death of my dear mother.

How old were you then?

Nine. A young lad of nine.

And did your father marry again?

Yes, he married Sarah Bush Johnson. She was a new mother to me. A wonderful person.

Did she encourage you to study?

Yes, I didn't like farm work. I knew it wasn't going to be my life. My new mother saw it and encouraged me to read.

What did you like to read?

Anything and everything. I liked "The Life of George Washington", Shakespeare, Aesop's "Fables".

Excuse me. Come in.

Good afternoon. Who are you?

Good afternoon, Mr. President. My name is John.

Where did you come from?

I was born here in America. But my grandfather came from Gambia in Africa and my grandmother came from Ghana.

So you have the roots from both countries?

Yes, my grandfather was about fifteen when he arrived in America. White slave traders took him from his village in Gambia one day and put him on a ship to the New World.

A long journey?

Yes, many slaves died from hunger and diseases during this journey.

And your grandmother, his wife, how old was she when she came here?

About 7 years old. She came with her mother.

Where did they meet?

On a cotton farm. One day my grandfather tried to run away but his master caught him and punished. He nearly died. My grandmother looked after him.

So, slavery have been existed in America for hundreds of years. Slaves have no rights at all - they are the property of their owners. They live in very bad conditions, receive minimal amounts of food and are treated very badly.

Now it is the year of 1863. I sign the Emancipation Proclamation - the great historical document that makes all slaves free!

Chinese music? here in America?!

This is San Francisco. I am a Chinese American. I have lived here all my life.

Oh! I would like to know much about the history of Chinese people in America.

My ancestors came here in 1850s. Before they lived in towns and villages in China. The men used to work in the fields and women used to stay at home cooking and looking after the children. Their life was difficult then and very poor. So over 20 thousand people came to California to find gold. They had a dangerous life. Their work was extremely hard. Some people found gold and became rich. But many people found nothing.

So many Chinese got jobs building rail ways from the West coast to the East coast. That was a difficult life too. Thousands of people died from cold, deceases, accidents and explosions.

A lot of Chinese came to live in San Francisco. They built homes in the centre of the city and called it "China Town". For a long time their life was hard. The government didn't allow them to get education. More than that, in 1906 a huge earthquake hit the city and completely destroyed China Town. But they rebuilt it.

This is China Town today. San Francisco has changed a lot. But some traditions have remained. And people do many of the same things they used to do. For example, we celebrate Chinese New Year with bright dragons, a symbol of China.

There are fifty states in the United States of America. The people of the United States are a mixture of many different nationalities. So, the United States is a big melting pot of countries. People from many different countries came to the US and made one country out of many.

From California to the New York island,

From the red-wood forest to the Gulf Stream water;

This land was made for you and me.

I saw above me

That endless sky-way,

This land was made for you and me.
