"Do You Know the United States of America?"

Цели урока: повторить грамматическое правило: употребление артиклей; практиковать учащихся в чтении; развивать догадку, смекалку; проконтролировать знания учащихся о США.

Оборудование: DVD для прослушивания диска Э.Пресли; тексты; тесты; карта США; стенд «Famous People of America».

1 -- Good morning! Sit down!

  • Who is on duty today?

  • What date is it today?

  • What day of the week is today?

  • What season is it now?

  • What is the weather like today?

  • Who is absent today at the English lesson?

Our lesson today is devoted to one of the largest countries in the world: the United States of America.

2 I want you to answer my humorous questions:

  1. Who speaks English, German, French and all other languages? (an echo)

  2. What is in the middle of the world? (letter - r --)

  3. What is in a country, in a capital, in a city, but not in a town? (letter - c --)

  4. Now, please, recollect the physical map of the USA.

6 The fact is that the USA gave many famous people to the world. Among them are scientists, writers, politicians, actors, singers, sportsmen. Today we shall read 5 texts about 5 famous American people. Look here. There are six names:

Louis Armstrong

Walt Disney

Henry Ford.

Read the texts and guess who this text is about.

  1. He was a singer and trumpet player, who was a major force in shaping jazz music in America in the 1920-s. He introduced new ideas to jazz and was known as the "King of Jazz". Ht was the first jazz soloist to receive world -wide recognition.

  2. He was born in 1863. He was a man, who transformed the world. In 1903 he established the Motor Company and introduced the Model T Ford. He wanted to make a car that everyone would be able to afford.

  3. He was an American artist and film producer, who was famous for his animated cartoons. He developed many new techniques in producing cartoons. His most famous characters are Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto.

In the 1950-s and 1960-s he began developing the family - entertainment parks.

  1. He was born when most of America was still a wilderness. The British had 13 colonies on the eastern coast. In 1776 war broke out between the colonies and their mother country, because the colonies wanted independence. He was a leader of the American army. After seven years of fighting the British gave up the war and colonies became an independent country with the name of the USA. He was made President and his name was given to the capital of the young nation.

  2. He was born in 1876 in San Francisco, California. His family was very poor, so he had to leave school to make money. In 1897 he went to Alaska to find the gold. Instead, he found ideas for his stories there. His writings were very popular and he became rich and famous before the age of 30. His books are translated into many languages.
